Insomnia and its Associated Factors that Influences on Quality of Life and Global Functioning in Remitted Schizophrenia : A Preliminary Study

|
Objectives : We investigated insomnia and its associated factors in patients with schizophrenia who were in remission and influences of these factors on patients’ quality of life and global functioning.
Methods : A cross-sectional study was conducted among eighteen patients with insomnia and thirty two patients without insomnia. All Subjects completed the sleep questionnaire for assessing the severities of sleep disturbances. Sociodemographic characteristics, psychosocial distress, depressive symptoms, and psychotic symptoms were assessed as a factor associated with insomnia. Quality of life and global functioning were assessed and analyzed in terms of correlation with insomnia and its associated factors.
Results : Insomnia and the severity of psychotic symptoms were independent of each other. Insomnia was strongly associated with employment, high levels of psychological distress and more severe depressive symptoms. Insomnia and depressive symptoms were significantly associated with poor quality of life in these patients. Global functioning was influenced by more severe psychotic symptoms and longer duration of untreated psychosis.
Conclusion : These findings suggest that more aggressive management of insomnia and depressive symptoms is recommended for improving the patient’s quality of life in remitted schizophrenia
